Learn about the history of the Bible in English and see the University’s first edition of the King James Bible

To mark the 400th anniversary of the first publication of the King James Bible, Elizabeth Henderson, Rare Books Librarian (University of St Andrews) will give the autumn lecture of the Friends of St Andrews University Library meeting.

The opening verses of the Book of Genesis, from the 1611 King James Bible (St Andrews copy at Bib BS185.C11).

The lecture will trace the history of the Bible in English before 1611, looking at significant translations and editions, some officially sanctioned by the Church and some condemned as heretical. It will go on to look in detail at the process of translation and revision which produced the King James version, the actual printing of the first edition, and its immediate reception and impact. The lecture will conclude with a closer look at the history of three local copies: a copy given to the University Library in 1612 by the Archbishop of Canterbury, but now lost; the copy of the first edition now held by the University Library (Bib  BS185.C11), and the copy in Holy Trinity Parish Church, St Andrews.

The lecture will be held in Parliament Hall at 5:15 pm on Wednesday, 23 November 2011. After the lecture the University Library’s copy will be on display in the King James Library, followed by coffee and tea. This is a public lecture, open to all!
