Advent Calendar: 20 December – Christmas Post
Photographs of postman Andrew Kirk delivering Christmas parcels and of the Christmas rush at the post office depot in St Andrews, December 1936 (GMC-EA-324 and GMC-EA-331-A).
These photographs were taken by George Cowie, a local press photographer from 1930 to 1982. His work covers all aspects of life in and around St Andrews and the East Neuk of Fife.
Heh, heh ... I love the photo of Andrew with bike, parcels, and cows; no spring chicken, Andrew. The lower photo seems to indicate there were few, if any, female postal workers in St Andrews in those days. Many thanks for these wonderful postings!
Andrew Kirk was my grandad. He died before I was born but my mum Audrey Kirk had a copy of this photo, and told me of his love of music and the pipes.
Dear Lesley, thanks for your comment. It is always nice to hear more about the people in the Collections.
