This year Echoes from the Vault will be posting an image of winter or Christmas from our collections every day from the 1st to 25th December. We hope you enjoy our Special Collections themed advent calendar!

For the 1st of December we are featuring the December page from the calendar in The booke of common prayer, and administration of the sacraments, 1637 (TypBE.C37YB). This includes the prayers for Christmas day. The Booke of common prayer is the traditional liturgy of the Church of England. This 1637 edition was imposed on Scotland under King Charles I and was also known as ‘Laud’s Liturgy’. Archbishop Laud wanted ‘to conform Scotland to the Church of England’ and reviewed or edited this version of the Prayer Book.

This edition was printed in Edinburgh by Robert Young and is bound with the Psalms, alleged to have been translated by King James VI and I.
